T
he current issue named by the media as “honour killing” deals with killing of couples by parents, brothers or cousins for bringing disgrace to the family by marrying from outside the caste and outside the religion. The killers say that a boy and a girl from the same gotra should not get married as they are considered as brother and sister. According to them it is a sin and deserves capital punishment. It is fine with those mindless people blinded with customs, traditions and their senseless rituals. Here I am not to stress that it is a gruesome crime which I believe by all means is! Here I am not to instigate people to take stern and untiring steps to fight against the evil. I also do not wish to emphasis that it is like “Sati” practiced in old days which was abolished by the successful efforts of our national leaders to name ‘Raja Ram Mohan Roy’, a prominent among them. I only want to clarify one thing that is the meaning of the word ‘honour’. Because I am now greatly confused and out of my senses. To my knowledge this word relates to the sense of pride, respect and dignity. If it is so how does the killing of human beings, that too own people related by blood, become an honour killing? Does this act provide a sense of pride, respect or dignity of killers? Killing our own people is never considered a dignified act. Our country India is famous in the world for its Policy of non violence. Now, what message would be conveyed to the world by this practice of “honour killing” from the practitioners of non violence? Will India be honoured by such killings practiced in our country? Slowly the meaning of the word “honour” is being changed or wrongly understood. The media should report such killings not as “honour killings” but as “killing honour” as those acts kill the honour of our country.
